I know this is a thread for the PSOne releases, but if I was going to rate them in toto, it'd probably be: The joy of the early games was the juxtaposition of the high-tech track and trackside objects inserted into canyons, jungles, old towns (think Gare d’Europa) and the like. Personally, I think they’ve gone too far along the route of making the backgrounds futuristic cities.

In fact, only a handful of tracks from Fusion, Pure and Pulse have matched the original’s and 2097’s, although HD and Fury have a larger range of good, memorable ones than there have been for years. The biggest drawback, though, is that the tracks aren’t amazing: there’s not enough attention paid to camber, width of track, or heights and drops. On the downside, the audio is less fearsome and is more ambient, the palette is far more muted, the backgrounds generally less interesting. W3 SE is lovely in that the AI is balanced, it’s ‘high res’ (by the standards of the time…), has 16:9, analogue control, better draw distance, more tracks, more ships, remastered old courses… a big, classy package. It's not the most comprehensive - certianly not the prettiest - but it's the cosest to the original vision. By the end, at Phantom class, you have to be running perfect laps to win. The structure’s great too, with lots of opportunity to learn the courses on easier difficulties before having to face them at ridiculous, death-defying speeds. I've played all the games bar 64 and Fusion in the last 18 or so months.Ģ097 - in particular - is beautifully balanced, never making the course too hard and AI too easy, or vice versa. It was taking the formula as trippy and abstract as possible, and as far as I could tell, it was a tribute to Women… Either way, if you’ve not tried the DLC of Pure at all, I urge you to give it a shot! One of my favourite ever courses was released as a DLC only extra on WipEout Pure, called Paris Hair.

I played the original PSP game and although I enjoyed it, the PSP launch title WipEout Pure, was the better out of the two of them.

Also the loading was a pain in the arse, taking an age to load anything.Īlthough I’ve not played it myself, there was another PS2 WipEout release that was an up scaled port of WipEout Pulse on the PSP. Some interesting courses do not make up for the fact that it looks nowhere near as beautiful as the originals (Despite the obvious jump in graphics) and I’m not keen on the control or music. I presume that’s the first WipEout on PS2, if so, then it’s really not that good. Thanks for the replies folks, bit off topic now, after digging through a cupboard in my flat I found a copy of wipeout for the ps2 (don't remember buying it?!) how does this compare to the ps1 versions ? Look out for the PlayStation pack that included this and Destruction Derby 2, as not only can you still find copies in its shrink wrap, but it’s a bit cheaper than the collectable original print run.Īll 4 releases are brilliant in different ways, I would go for either WipEout 2097 as it’s my favourite, but maybe source a copy of Wi3out Special Edition to get you started! All the contents of the original, but has more tracks ripped from its back catalogue, making it a fuller package. Wi3out Special Edition is the game to go for if you’re interested in the third game.

The track has little flow or movement to it, but has a ultra-elaborate, and fairly long section that is almost devoid of difficulty due to the ease of control over the original. For example, the first course you race on (I believe it’s called mega mall) is fairly uninspiring and grey, but has a huge loop section in the first quarter. The development team obviously looked to combine the hairpin set pieces of the original with the refinement of 2097, but nothing really combines to make a classic course. Stunning UI design, ambient music choices, high resolution graphics and widescreen support are in its favour, but I have a few issues with the course design. One of the best racing games of all time. WipEout 2097 is my personal favourite, with great music, beautiful art design, and memorable courses. However, the difficulty is as solid as Marble and although the track design is not the most flowing, it has ridiculous hairpin turns with some great camber changes. WipEout is the hardest to go back to as it looks dated nowadays and the course and music selection is not amongst my favourite. To be honest you can’t really go wrong with any of the PlayStation era WipEout games, it’s just taking your pick.
